Sony shutting down PlayStation Mobile

Sony said last week that PlayStation’s foray into the realm of mobile games, PlayStation Mobile, would be discontinued.

This means that PSM games will no longer be distributed on PlayStation storefronts starting July 15 this year. The PSM DevPortal will shutter on November 30.

Sony launched PSM to the public in 2012, as a software framework meant as a low-barrier option for smaller developers to create mobile games for PS Vita and PlayStation-certified Android devices.

PSM didn’t get the traction that Sony had hoped for, but worthwhile games were still released on the platform, including Vlambeer’s Super Crate Box, Grapefrukt’s Rymdkapsel, Honeyslug’s Passing Time, Necrosoft’s Gunhouse, and others.

The upside is that the discontinuation of PSM will bring more integration to PlayStation games on Vita — PSM games were shoved to a different section than native Vita games, and were a separate initiative from the rest of Vita game development.

PlayStation is still taking game submissions for PSM through May 31 this year. For players, September 10 is the last day to re-download any PSM games.

Sony said it would pay any remaining payment balances to developers in November, and PSM publisher license agreements will be terminated.
